In the first part of the Russian campaign Feig commanded 3./ Schtz. Regt. 113 (I./ Schtz. Regt. 113 was commanded Major Eckinger whose WP and RK docs were on Niemann's site recently). As a SPW company this unit was attached to I./ Pz. Regt. 1 and formed the spearhead of the division's initial advances across <ST1Lithuania</ST1. Feig was wounded on 25th June and di not return until September by which time the division was outside <ST1lace Leningrad</ST1. Feig again commanded 3./ Schtz. Regt. 113 in the assault on <ST1lace Leningrad</ST1 which eventually petered out in mid-September

The division was withdrawn from the Leningrad area and sent to Army Group Centre in preparation for Operation Typhoon, the assault on <ST1lace Moscow</ST1. Major Eckinger had led a thrust 75 kilometres into enemy territory in the direction of Kalinin and on 14th October Feig's company with 2 Panzer III's attached (with Feig's own Sdkfz 251\10 in the lead) burst through the Russians with the objective of securing the bridge of the <ST1Volga Canal</ST1 before the Soviets could destroy it. On reaching the bridge Feig himself took 36 men and raced over the 250 metre wide bridge and secured a bridgehead on the northern bank. It was for this he was awarded the RK on 4th December 1941.

As an aside Eckinger's own SPW was hit by Russian tank fire from a camouflaged T34 during the dash to the bridge and he was killed. The Soviets launched tank attacks to recapture the bridge and during this fighting Feig was wounded again on 20th October 1941.<O

All the events surrounding the attack on <ST1Kalinin</ST1 bridge, Feig's RK and Eckinger's death are covered in some detail in the 1. Panzerdivision history.<O</O

Feig didn't rejoin the division until September 1942 when it was situated in the Rzhev salient. Feig became battalion commander of II./ Pz. Gren. Regt. 113 - the battalion was equipped with SPWs and as such played a major part in the extremely heavy fighting in the Rzhev salient in November and December 1942.<O

In January 1943 1. Panzerdivision was withdrawn to France to refit and did not return to Russia until November 1943, although it did spend time in Greece in the summer of 1943 when the Germans thought the Allies may land in <ST1lace Greece</ST1.<O

Feig was still commanding II./ Pz. Gren. Regt. 113 when the division was committed in the counterattack towards <ST1Kiev</ST1 in mid-November 1943. Feig was stabbed in the back with a knife while personally conducting a reconnaissance and badly wounded. However, his regiment collected him from the field hospital and he took command of <ST1I.</ST1/ Pz. Gren. Regt. 113 (equipped with SPWs). While commanding this battalion Feig took part in the attempt to relieve the <ST1Cherkassy</ST1 pocket in February 1944. During this operation Feig was given command over a large number of other 1. Panzerdivision units including II./ Pz. Regt. 1, II./ Pz. Gren. Regt 1 as part of Gruppe Feig. This kampfgruppe was tasked with protecting the flank of the division as the other parts of the division and Pz. Regt. Bäke attempt to reach the pocket.<O</O
<O
The next major operation for 1. Panzerdivision came in March 1944 when the division was caught in the Kamenets-Podolsk pocket. At this time Feig was commanding Pz. Gren. Regt. 113. The best part of 1. Panzer Armee was caught in the pocket including 6., 7., 11., 16. 17. 19. Panzerdivisions and kampfgruppe from 1. SS LAH and 2. SS Das Reich. Over a period of two weeks the German units formed a huge mobile pocket and fought their way back to the German lines.<O</O

Feig's regiment formed the spearhead of 1. Panzerdivision (he commanded Kampfgruppe Feig in the breakthrough - Pz. Gren. Regt. 113 + attached units). On 5th April 1944 his leg was badly broken by shell splinters. According to the 1. Panzerdivision history he was placed on a zeltbahn and dragged to safety through a hail of bullets by his staff. Feig was awarded the DKiG in May 1944 for his service in the previous few months.<O
<O
Feig never returned to 1. Panzerdivision and the end of the war found him commanding a Panzer Grenadier training school.<O</O
