    U stamp in Kriegsmarine Soldbuch

    Hello,

I wonder if somebody can help me with this; I have a soldbuch to a Kraftfahr-Maat who served a.o. with 2/MAA 280 and 24. MKA. Several notations make clear he served in the St. Nazaire region, like the stamp of the Kdt. der Seeverteidigung Loire und Mar. Nachr.Off. St.Nazaire, plus the remark at the second page, where the Marine Stammrollennummer is replaced with: Personalliste St.Nazaire Nr 3146.

What I have never seen, below his photo on the first page is a large stamp, showing a U, and something that looks like a signature written across it. I do know that U-Bootpersonel sometimes had a U stamped in their Soldbuch, I have one from the K-Verband that has a small U, but this seems different.

I know that a picture would be easier, but don't have a server at the moment. I can off course send a JPG to anyone interested.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Maurice

    Hi Maurice,

I have PM'ed you with an email address.......
I have examples with Personalliste St.Nazaire, Lorient and a few other areas, however, "U" I have only ever found in U-boot crew member Soldbücher.

Maybe the signature is cancelling this stamp by mistake?

      Hi Ian,

I have seen your PM, pictures are on their way.

What did this 'Personalliste' mean, when did they get this?

      Kind regards,

      Maurice

        Maurice,

I think the Personalliste was much the same as the Stammrollennummer, however this time it is the number he held within a Festung or enclosed defensive position....
I have seen this for St.Nazaire and Lorient especially but will take a look for other examples....

        /Ian

            For Maurice:

            Another example;

This is from a Bootsmann who served with the 5. K-Division. This unit was in IJmuiden with Seehunde. His Soldbuch shows a U, but I don't think that makes him a U-bootfahrer, although he also was at Lehrkommando 300. I can't find him anywhere on the lists of Seehundfahrer, Klaus Mattes, who wrote the book on Seehunde doesn't know him, and he is not mentioned in interrogation reports. It seems more likely that he was on a KFK, which also were with the unit, since he was on a KFK Schulflottille just before. Another possibily was that he was among the shore crew.

            Kind regards,

            Maurice

Not true to say that "U" have been ever found on U-Boat crew member's Soldbuch.

This is an example I already posted in the past. Here is the Soldbuch of a Gefreiter from 21./III./Festung-Stamm-Trp.XXV.
The Gefreiter Josef Mehring was allowed to access to Normandieschleuse (Ecluse Joubert for French) and South and East Schleuse.

This unit was in charge of defending the Port against any attack.

Is it because the "U" respesents those based at a U-boot stronghold?
St. Nazaire was the home for 6 and 7 U-bootsflottille...
I have about 8 with Personalliste Lorient, La Rochelle, La Spezia or St.Nazaire but none have a "U" stamped.....but all are U-boat bases/strongholds!!!

                  U stamp in Soldbucher

Here is a scan from a soldbuch I have in my collection. It is from a meber of the 22 Unterseeboot flotille. It had a big red U stamped on the first page. I do not know if this soldier ever did a combat mission on a U-boot, but he did serve i the 3.U.A.A., and the 3.U.L.D. (3th Unterseeboot Ausbildungs Abteilung, and 3th Unterseeboot lehr Division).
At the end of the war this soldier fought with the 1./Mar.Gren.Rgt 6.
