dog tag ID with corrosion, copy or grave robbing?

once again we see a dogtag which has obviously been "buried" or treated to bring forth corrosion, and of course of a rare unit. I strongly advise that collectors stay away from these tags with corrosion for two reasons: 1. they are often faked and artificially aged to get a sale 2. if they are real, chance are it is the work of grave robbers which means the soldier will never be identified for the family! I personally am interested in dogtags also and have maybe 90 in my collection, but do not want to have grave robber artifacts as part of my collection. I hope that the people who purchase these highly corroded pieces are in fact buying copies and not the real thing!

sorry Pzv you havent right .what is differnt between corosion of dogtag and par example on ss buckle .many of militar items have corsion patin etc.

about dogtags - 95% 2ww german was ground dug, and maybe 5%from this 95% was found in graves. (like badges ,buckles etc.) it is not cause for don't colected rest of them .

laah tags is ovcours fake ,but many from orginal tags was burried too and they have this type of coosin.

I am sorry Miraul but I cannot agree to your numbers. Here in Germany there is no need to deal with ground dug dog tags as enough are around in collectable condition and at reasonable prices. I prefer to have them with the original cord or chain or leather pouch if possible as well as the Soldbuch or Wehrpass which is even better. The best yet is to get it from the soldier themselves of which I have gotten many. 5% from grave robbers is still too high a figure and is not to be tolerated and also does our hobby no good to say nothing of being tasteless. The grave diggers rob the families of knowing the whereabouts of their fallen relatives and a dog tag that is found should be turned in for identification, not sold for profit!!!
It is normal that a dogtag has some corrosion, especially if the cord was wrapped around it for a number of years- the salt in the cord corrodes the metal. I also concede that caches of dog tags have turned up which were not issued (but should normally not have a blood type!) but these buried condition and questionable source items have no place in my collection. I have attached a photo taken a few years ago of some of my tags. Please note that none of these are ground dug.

hi. in nowdays only grund dug tags are 100% orginal (almost )
i have only ground dug dt and most of theme never had owners (such as several number of tags from one unit without bloodgruop ,never used etc.)all of them aren't from graves .most of all german tags was found in pow camps or place whan was destroyed stab of german unit not frm graves.

                      dogtags

Here are a few more with detail, the tag in the previous shot is a Gebirgsjäger with interesting corrosion in the middle from the cord being wrapped around it for years.
