Sorry, it's no good ! Look at the '3', that is a font that Russian fakers are using nowadays. I got burned with one myself. The guy at russian-items.com has several of these he has been trying to sell on ebay, all with the same funky '3'. That is a modern font '3', never found on real WW2 dog tags.

I would be more concerned with the very fine-cut edges. Both around the tag itself and the lack of wear in the neck cords.
Not sure about the "3". Unless you have seen a representation of every era and every different unit which discs were made, its hard to say that the "font" itself was never used, as you may notice almost every disc differs font wise from one another.
However, I have noticed that dealer from russian-items.com and one thing you may notice from the tags he sells is how they are all very similiar in font, whether they are from different time-periods or completely different units. That in itself is fishy. If that 3 is popping up on lots of tags, from different units - definetly a sign of a fake.
I will agree, without a doubt, this tag is a fake though =) Be wary...VERY wary of SS tags!
Gary T- I'm not sure what you are asking...can you explain more?
Cheers,
Chris

Wouldn't worry much about no wear on the holes, many were carried in pockets and special holders. My point was the font style of the '3', that always goes with the same font letters that only this russian-items.com guy is trying to push. I didn't mention the obvious: inscription should be 6./SS etc. not SS-6./ etc. The SS never comes first on a real tag, and too the "P.E" is bad - Prinze Eugen was always spelled out on those unit tags. Bad all the way around.

As for wear on the tag/neck holes - I usually look at that sort of thing in conjunction with other things, as you are correct - that alone would not constitute a fake, as many discs you may come across may not even have been issued - just stamped. In this case, the tag WAS issued (if it was real) because of the blood group stamp. In the case of proof of its issue, I'm a little more skeptical of tags that have no wear. Of course, like you said, some people probably didn't wear their tags, but rather kept them on them somewhere. I believe it was standard practice to wear them around your neck however and chances are 90% of those that were issued to a soldier and used for any period of time would have been worn like that. Because this is an SS tag, I tend to take them with a grain of salt - so any little thing that doesn't fit for me, I would conclude it was a fake or at least be unsure enough to buy it. Hope my reasoning makes sense! Interesting how you see more SS tags than anything else, yet they only made up a small fraction of the Wehrmacht!
As for your observations on the actual stamping - I wasn't aware that it was improper for the "SS" portion to come before the unit designation, where did you hear that? Mind you, the one and only SS tag I have fits that observation of yours, with the "SS" printed AFTER the kompanie. Would love to know where you heard that, because it would make my deciphering SS tags much easier!
As for the "P.E." portion, I'm not sure if you are just referring to the Prinze Eugen, or all units of that nature, but from my experience I don't think you could base any facts on the abbreviation of that, as I've seen some with and without. That goes for all words within the disc (perfect example - Erastz is sometimes "E" or "Ers" or even "Erastz"). Perhaps you have more specific knowledge of the Prinze Eugen stampings that I don't though...
Cheers,
Chris
