Thanks again Ian for this very usefull information. It makes more sense now we know he probably got his EK1 for actions after the Normandy landing.

The KVK1 indeed has the name of Bauer. Please notethe EK1 entry is also signed Bauer. I don't have the WP with me for the moment but I'll have a look next weekend if I can find him in other entries. The words to the left of his name could be "Nachsh. .... Abt."

As for his deformation, that could probably be a reason (besides his age of 36 in 1939) he was placed in a Nachschub unit, despite his 5 years experience in the Reichswehr and his skills (sports, shooting, and obviously combat as well).

It will be the same as his KVK II....Nachsch.Kol.Abt. 596...his unit at that time!

As you can see from the unit info I posted earlier, Kraftfahr-Abteilung 595 was formed/reorganised on 1.4.1943 from the großen Kw.Kolonnen der Nachschub-Kolonnen-Abteilung 595, 596 and 552.

      Nachschub-Kolonnen-Abteilung 596

      Formed 22.8.1940 through Wehrkreis V with 7 großen Kw.Kolonnen; Gave the Kolonnen to Kraftfahr-Abteilung 595 (as 2. and 3. Kompanie) and became Kraftlahr-Abteilungsstab z. b. V. 596 on 13.4.1943.

Under: Army troops: West (7. Armee), September 1943 Italy with Heeresgruppe C

      Replacements: 25 Müllheim/Baden; 1943 E 5 Müllheim, WK V
