    Death Notice?

    Hi All,

I know the first part reads " fell on 'date'" but what does the rest of the sentance mean? Is it an indication as to how he died?

    Thanks.

    hello David.
Indicates location of death, apparently on the eastern front.

The town is Medyn (also spelt as Medin) which is on the Yukhnov - Maloyaroslavets rail line which then runs north east to Moscow.
I'm not sure the description should be north west of this town...98 Infanteriedivision had abandoned Medyn on 14th January and had been ordered to fall back to positions on the Shanya river south west of the town. However such was the chaos during the retreat from Moscow it is likely that elements of the division were scattered.
Just to give you an idea of the conditions your man was experiencing...on 12th January the temperature was minus 30 degrees celsius...on 26th January, just after his death, it was down to minus 42 degrees celsius. Between 12th and 27th January 98 ID lost 100 dead, 419 wounded and 1,178 sick.

        Cheers,
        Gary.
