This soldier simply died, perhaps in a POW camp - case closed. Gestorben translates to "Died," nothing more. Trust me, there were no roving squads of SS soldiers at the end of May 1945.Last edited by Stormfighter; 05-16-2007, 07:36 PM.

Thanks for the replies, even if the seller didn't have the courtesy to answer.
The word "gestorben" means "died," I agree, but the red pencil entry with the same date below it looks like "Schuss" which is "shot". My question was to try and find out if the seller stated he was executed based solely on this entry. Even if he was shot, it doesn't mean to say he was executed. It could have been an accident, shot whilst escaping from a POW camp or whilst evading arrest. Or it could of course been added to make the item more interesting. However, the seller chose not to respond so I doubt we'll ever know.
Thanks again for those who took time to answer.
Max.

I'm not too sure the word is "Schuss" (particularly the "u" doesn't seem right) and besides that, I would have expected something like "erschossen" if he would have been executed.
Please note he was already 50. In that time, many men died at that age without any bullets involved. Perhaps there are even medical entries in the Soldbuch which prove he was already in bad shape before the end of the war.
