maybe a field made tag!? Cord holes off, break slots look drilled and filed, letters look engraved.....Maybe its just my tired old eyes...

why the interest? Is it a special unit or something?

In my opinion, this is an original dogtag. The unit is a Landes Schutzen Batallion (a reserve home guard unit).
