What's The Best Way To Organize Filing & Indexing Of SB & WP?

It may sound a stupid question, but what's the best filing system for SB & WP?

Not the physical filing but a system to keep track of them.

Having originally divided my collection into SB & WP, I kept them in alphabetical order by name, which was fine until the collection grew.

Do most people file them in numerical order by division?

Divide into arm of service, numerical order by regiment, seperate system for SB, WP, SB & WP pairs?

I know this sounds very basic, but I need to refile to a workable system.

I keep mine in alphabetical order, however it is difficult with the amount I have...to be honest quite a few are "stored" in a box ready for filing, but I never get the chance to do it!

Originally I did have them by arm, Heer, Kriegsmarine, Luftwaffe and SS....you can still count on two hands the amount of SS I have but not the other arms!

I store them in A4 binders, in A4 FDC sheets.....two per page!

Below is a photo I took some years ago which I found on the forum.....others have long gone though.....

I also have a list of my items, date of purchase, bought from, description and price paid.

Another list with a brief description for insurance purposes and a detailed list with full translation and research.

    /Ian

just ensure the plastic sleeves you use for storing docs and photos are ACID FREE, ARCHIVE QUALITY. The majority of plastic sleeves in your local stationery shop will not be this quality.
You must either see it printed on the packaging material, or enquire direct with the manufacturer.

If you dont, then over the years, your collection will discolour and lose value.

Unfortunately I don't have the volume that Ian has....actually from the looks of the image he has a bed to tuck in his groups. Then again he is a differant strata of collector.

But joking aside since my collecting is limited to LW I've structured/filed my collection based on Kampfgeschwader, Jagdgeschwader, HG Div. etc.. and under each catagorey I number the units from lowest to highest KG1, KG2.....KG100, Gren. Rgt 1..Gren. Rgt. 3 etc..

In my mind it amounts to recall of what I have and reducing it to their specific branch within the LW works well.

        Cheers

At the moment I store mine in seperate folders - thin black plastic with transparent front covers, conaining plastic sleeves - I've always been aware that the plastic pages are not suitable in the long term, so I need to aquire "proper" ones for the original documents, keep the cheapo pages for scans & printouts & other info within the file.

They're then stored in alphabetical order in plastic file boxes, divided into arm of service - mainly Heer, some LW, a dozen WSS & KZ - & my one & only KM.

What I have'nt done yet is get an index typed up, so I'd better get going with that.

I store my Soldbücher und Wehrpäßen in heavy duty, clear zip-loc bags that are just a tad bit bigger than the books themselves, and I file them alphabetically in a cardboard boxes similar (but much smaller than) storage boxes used for comic books. I use a binder system very similar to Ian’s for all of my documents.
