    Sticky Tape

    Giday everyone,

Recently I was given a Soldbuch that had a few loose pages. The former owner of the book has used sticky tape to attach the loose pages to the book. I would like to remove the sticky tape but do not wish to damage the pages in any way. Does anyone have any suggestions regards how I must go about this?

    All the best,

    Ian

    Ian,

I have a few books taped together and the adhesive has 'soaked' through the front of the tape, sticking the pages together. I have chosen to keep the books in their original condition. Any other suggestions?

      Hi Ian,

Unfortunately, most transparent tape you're likely to find uses a water-soluble adhesive, so there's no way to dissolve it short of dunking your Soldbuch in the bath with you. There could be other solvents that would do the trick, but thier effect on the old paper and the ink would likely make their use no more viable an option. The only thing I can think of is to dry it out. Being a water-soluble adhesive, it is subject to drying and if you've ever encountered an old piece of tape or one that has been near a heat source for a time, you probably know that it will just come off with a touch- the adhesive having turned to powder. Perhaps a hair dryer on low heat not too close to the Soldbuch for some hours or days would do it. I'd definitely suggest experimenting on something else before you try it on the Soldbuch though. It's age that discolors tape, so if it's new, the drying shouldn't cause any major discoloration- you may have a little residue left, but to me that would be preferable to tape...
