Hello Harry,

If you are going to collect documents in the future, my advice is that you should start reading books about ww2 history and small unit history asap.
It is not only vital to have knowledge on how the documents should look and be authentic, but also the history behind them. That you also know the little part they were in the great world war.
Document collecting is all about history, this you can not learn only by using this forum or the internet. Books are going to be needed!
You have to know unit-history almost like the back of your hand not to be caught purchasing fake's in the future.
When you find answers for your questions yourself, it is a very rewarding feeling.

Just to reitterate what Peter has said, reading books and having the an insight about history, wars on fronts etc. helps!

When I, most probably Peter (don't know his age!!) and many other members, started collecting, the internet was not available, so reading history books, learning a foreign language and taking an interest to learn more was part of the hobby and essential if you wanted to know what you had!

Although forums help tremendously, it has taken away that "self help" option and some people are too lazy even to do a "google search".......

My library is full of references for unit histories, orders of battles, holders of high awards, original admin references and material etc. which has taken some years to collect, however now people want an answer straight away!!!

I am not picking on anyone by posting this response, however use your own brain and look yourself before posting questions.

Of course we will help you if you can not find what you want, but you will get more benefit doing the research yourself....

That was hard work as I have had a 15 hour day and had a few whiskies to finish off!!

Hello Ian,

My case is a bit different, I had the good fortune to have one of the biggest document collector and dealer worldwide as a very good and personal friend. So we debated and studied this topic almost every day, often face to face for many years. So I had the chance to see an enormous amount of documents in the past.
I was always scared of computers but it was also him that convinced me to go on the internet so when he was going to pass away (he had a fatal illness) I could still enjoy my hobby.
But I can tell you people nothing beats personel contact with other collectors to debate an view other items. Network!

The first advice he gave me was read about history, the only way to gain the necessary knowledge no matter it is about WW2 or the 19th century.

Yes, I knew your friend well through the internet, spoke to him on many occassions but never met him personally.

I bought some good items from him over the years and do miss his emails......very sad but he did tell me of his illness.

Well, it is good that you are now here, even though most people do not perhaps know who you are!
