Hi guys-
I thought I'd share one of my new acquisitions with you.
This is a small document grouping to Unteroffizier Walter Westendorf, who served with the 12.(M.G.)komp./Inf.Rgt.16 of the 22.Infanterie-Division (Luftlande).
The EKII document, awarded on 18.Mai.1940 for his participation in I.R.16’s airlanding operations in Holland during the Western campaign, is signed by Knights Cross, Oaks and Swords recipient Generalleutnant Hans Kreysing who, on 01.November 1943 became General der Gebirgstruppe.
The IAB document was awarded on 05.August, 1941 for combat with Army Group South during the opening stages of the invasion of Russia is signed by Knight's Cross and DKIG recipient General der Infanterie Dietrich von Choltitz.
The Black Wound Badge document was awarded for wounds sustained on 04.September, 1941.
Included in the grouping is a Russian POW document which states that Westendorf was released from captivity on 31.December 1954 and is accompanied by a official certificate of discharge. 5 years of combat and 10 years in the Russian gulags weren’t kind as is evident by comparing the two portraits (both of which are copies).
This is a great little grouping to a rare unit that I am very happy to have acquired. I'm especially happy with the EKII document as it was awarded just 8 days into the French campaign, and the signature by Kreysing is simply the icing on the cake. I hope you enjoy the pictures. For more information on the 22.I.D. (LL) go here.
