    Hello

Yes, now you are right. In the past.....

But nowadays the WASt answers only if you are a kinsman.

It is new, I think it is since 2006. No answers for Erkennungsmarken questions... (Names)

    The procedure was the following:
You have to do a question via letter or email with the Erkennungsmarken inscription. After that you get a letter with the infos (Name, rank and the destiny of the soldier) Within the letter there was a payment slip. (6 Euro for one dogtag info) That means that you get the info first and than you have to pay. If you have dogtag question over 30 Euro (I think it was 30 Euro) you got a payment slip at first and after paying you got the info.

I'm sure you are right on the matter of nur die Erkennungsmarken. I say that because I do not recall ever seeing any discussions on just that.

However, it is my understanding (and from my own personal experience) that WASt stopped providing information on Wehrmacht soldiers in 1988-89, except to family and relatives. Prior to that, researchers, collectors, historians or anyone for that matter, could write to WASt and give them a name and date of birth and they would provide what information they had. The cost was DM 20,00. The same thing was true for Namentliche Verlustmeldungen. All of that stopped in 1988-89.

I have not had the occasion to ask WaSt for detailed info in the last couple of years and if what you are saying is true then it is indeed very unfortunate, not only for those who just collect such items but more importantly for anyone who discovers a disc.

            Hello

            I am again

I have a large official correspondence from the WASt in case of this subject.

Official statement of the WASt is, that they don`t record or register dogtags or dogtag inscriptions when there was no mortal remains next to the dogtag.

To realize what is meant: ==> dogtags from flea markets, from ground dugs without bones, dogtags from ebay and so on.

There is no point in sending dogtags or dogtag inscriptions, if there were no bones.

If someone doesn`t belive this, than I can send some scans from WASt letters via eMail. (only in german)

            Best regards, Fronti
