    Hermann Staiger Luftwaffe ace

    Hello,

I recently aquired some documents that belonged to Luftwaffe ace Hermann Staiger. I know that some years ago his Soldbuch, which is unfortunately not part of the group I have, was sold at a Military Show in the UK. I would love to find it and re-join the group again. Does anybody have an idea who it might own today? I know it is almost an impossible task but I just have to try :-) Any help would be very appreciated!

    Kind regards
    Roger

I'm sorry I cannot answer your question, Roger, but I would like to ask one in return. Can you add any information to the thumbnail bio sketch below, such as his date of entry into the Luftwaffe, the FFS A/B and JFS he attended, etc., or perhaps advise on any errors you might note?

    It would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately, I do not know where Staiger's Soldbuch currently presides. I will do some asking about and see if anyone knows of its whereabouts. However, it would be interesting to see the documents that you have.

      Andy

        Hi BHS1956,

Unfortunately, I cannot tell you more than you have already as unfortunately the Soldbuch was not part of the group (nor the Wehrpass or flight log). So, I don't have more information. I would be particularly interested in his II/JG7 time as my major interest is the Me 262, but little is known. I know that a photo of him and Galland (1945) in München Riem exist, so it might be that he finally transferred to JV44.

        Hi Andy,

Thank you very much for asking around. It would be worth much to me if you could find it for me! I would love to complete the group. Perhaps there were even his flight logs.

I'll post photos as soon as I have received the items. They are still on the way to me and I would like to post photos only if I really have them in my hands. But that is a matter of days.

        All the best,
        Roger

          Hi Roger,

If you locate his Soldbuch, etc., I hope you will put them up for us to look at.

This claim about Staiger and JG 7 must be a mistake that has been repeated and carried through time in various accounts. II./JG 7 was not formed until 24 February 1945 (at Brandenburg-Briest), so Staiger could not have been its Kommandeur. The erroneous accounts claim he was appointed Kommandeur on 12 Jan 45 and held that position until approximately 5 Feb 45. Rather, it appears, that he was intended to be the Kommandeur, but then replaced around 5 February by Hptm. Lutz-Wilhelm Burkhardt. In any event, formation of II. Gruppe was never completed and no combat missions were ever flown. At the end of February, the pilots were sent from Brandenburg-Briest to Landsberg/Lech for conversion training. The first batch completed this training in early April, but on return to Brandenburg-Briest they and their Me 262s were reassigned to I. and III./JG 7. That was the end of II. Gruppe.

                Nice photo

                Mike,
Great photo. By all accounts he was a very fine Officer who survived the War to die at a relatively young age.
