    Help with unit in Soldbuch

    Dear All,

I was going through my docs and came across this unit. Is it:

    Überschweres (ss) Festungs M.G. Btl. (2cm) 805

What does the "(ss)" stand for? Any info on this unit?

    Thanks and best regards,

    Albert

(ss) is short for uberschweres. Don't ask me why they repeat it like that. Uberschweres means heavy, like a tripod mounted MG. All I see is that the unit was formed August 1944 in WK XII, then changed to Festungs-Infantirie-Fla-Btl. 805 in November 1944. Then disbanded in Feb. 1945.

        Thanks Jeff,

Oh boy, who would have thought "ss" means "überschwer". What exactly is the English counterpart to "überschwer" if there is any? "Heavy" is just "schwer"...

        Best regards,

        Albert

Well certain British artillery units used the term 'super heavy', i know that refers to very large calibre guns but it's about the closest English military term i can think of. 'super heavy machinegun battalion'
