My first (real) Soldbuch, need help !

As earlier thread showed, my first Soldbuch was a fake, but here's my first REAL Soldbuch (this I'm 100% sure it's good)

    The fake one: http://www.imgloading.com/gallery.php?gid=2418333

I'd like to get some info on this new one, where was he stationed, looks like Norway in 1945 ?
Please help out with medals and awards and so on.

    The new one:

This one was inclosed, what is it ?

There's no problem with that one!!!

I don't have the time at the moment but I would say he was in Norway for 2-3 years looking at his units....the appear to be a Local Defence, Fortifications and a Supply unit.

Regarding awards I can only see the War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords on the top of page 21, anything under those extra payment sheets?.....page 22 refers to tobacco cards and the F******252;hrergeschenk or Leaders Gift which consisted or extra rations, occasionally money and alcohol!!!

Nice original Soldbuch loaded with entries and traces the career of a soldier who served almost the entire war (he missed it by just one week )

This one should be a lot of fun to dig through and research.

The extra document there looks to be a final pay statement upon termination of service around the end of WW1, as it's dated 1918.

            Hank-

You're right - I didn't notice the date on that document. His D.O.B. looks like August 1900, so he would have been old enough to see service at the tail end of the first World War! His age would explain his unit assignments and duties during WWII (Landesschützen, Supply)

So now you've got a Soldbuch to a solder who served during and survived TWO world wars

Definitely makes up for that first one

              Thanks guys.

Here's what's rest of the award page (what does the last line say?):

And what is the writing on the back cover of the Soldbuch ?

A classic 'Norwegian' SB. you know as well as i do where Steinkjer is and by the looks of it he'd served in the Trøndelag general area for several years.

One interesting entry i see is on the weapons issue page. He was given a Bergmann MP18 in 1942, a real relic of the first world war, as well as a compass and binos. I guess he was something like a section commander whilst he was an unteroffizier with Festungs Btl.654 which i understand was based in the Ørlandet area.

The last line gives when and under what authority he was awarded his KVKII. Although not an integral part of the 702 ID it was under it's command as that division was responsible for the area. In this case the award was published by a divisional 'order of the day' on the 30th Jan. one of the days when the germans traditionally awarded good service medals such as the KVK, the others being 20th April and 1st Sept.

                    "Auszeichnungen" = Awards, or Decorations

"Kriegsverdienstkreuz II.Klasse mit Schwertern" War Merrit Cross 2nd Class with swords, awarded on 30.Jan.1944

The last line looks like it says "gem.702.I.II.IIa.Div.TagesbefehlNr.2 v.30.1.44" which is the unit that approved and issued the award, I believe.

Here's another page that was covered by a fold-out page (what does it say ?):

I have not included a second of those glued in shooting-test pages + the vactination page.

So how much is this worth ? (I'm not selling)

Is there a photo inside the front cover?

What it - or anything for that matter - is "worth" is very, very subjective; If you ask 10 different collectors what item "x" is worth, you might get 10 (or more!) different answers.

I collect books to combat soldiers who served with Infanterie, Panzerj******228;ger, Panzergrenadier or Panzer units; Soldiers that actually fought in combat. The “non-combat” (there are always exceptions) M.O.S. books, such as veterinarian, construction or quartermaster units don't have much appeal to me, hence I’m less inclined to pay a lot of money for them. Same goes for books units issued very late in the war, or front line unit soldiers who spent most of their “combat time” in a hospital

Your book definitely has appeal to it; it's a very comprehensive and well filled out book to a soldier who spent a good deal of time in Norway (which has a lot of sex appeal to our Scandinavian collectors ) it looks completely original and un-messed with, not to mention the book spans almost the entire length of the war... Who really knows - $75, $100? Personally I wouldn't pay much more than that for it, but others might say that price is way too low. The tape down the spine (can't tell if it's a "period" repair but my guess would be No) might be considered a bit of an issue with some, but considering how fragile these books are and the wear and tear they went through (not to mention that they were supposed to be destroyed upon the soldier's release from active duty, or due to death) it's amazing that they survived at all.

                        Rob

Edit: Another thing I just thought of- your book has not been "de-nazified" which is a definite bonus. IMHO nothing hurts the value of a SB or WP more than having the hakenkreuz on every stamp as well as the front cover inked over, scratched up, or even worse - cut out!

Page 8 unfortunately only records the issue of soaps, washing, shaving etc.
