It's a WWI disc- the SS isn't the SS, although I'm not familiar enough with WWI unit types to say just what it really is. The front, which you have labelled as reverse, gives the soldier's name, home town, birthdate and first unit- that was the 4. Maschinengewehr Ersatz Kompanie (4th MG replacement company), 18. Armeekorps (18th Army Corps). The marking on the reverse shows his field unit- MG SS Abteilung 55, 3. Kompanie, (MG SS Detachment 55, 3rd company) and his serial number 164. 'SS' when not meaning Schutzstaffel, usually refers to super-heavy when refering to artillery- but of course that wouldn't fit with machine guns. Maybe one of the WWI guys can help...

Actually, SS does fit with MGs- in WWII there was apparently a unit type 'ss MG Fest Btl'- schwerste MG Festungs Bataillon, listed as having operated 2cm and 3,7cm automatic cannon. Of course it is in the wrong place on this disc for that, so again a WWI unit expert should be able to tell you for sure. Try the Imperial Forum...
