    id disc ss4th and 9th

    Hi everybody.
    This is my first post on this forum:-) It seems realy nice.
    My question is. Does anyone have information about 4th SS panzer grenadier and 9th SS panzer grenadier regiments. I have two discs and wonder were those tank regiments fought. I bought them in eastern europe.

    Hi Sovvisor,

    Welcome!

    Firstly, you've made a slight error- Panzergrenadiere were the infantry part of a Panzer Division so the units named on your discs arent tank regiments, but infantry. Eastern Europe is a dangerous place to buy Erkennungsmarken- especially SS ones. 99.9% you'll find are fakes. I, myself, would only feel confident buying an SS disc from a VERY reputable dealer or a friend who either dug it up himself or can vouch for its provenance.

    I'm afraid I don't have any Order of Battle references with which to actually answer your question, but I'd be happy to give you my opinion on the authenticity of your discs if you want to send me scans of them.

    The main things I've learned to look for are- 'sharp' edges- a disc worn by someone would end up with more rounded edges everywhere, especially in the neck cord holes which often become obviously worn; Blood group letters are usually different than those used to mark the unit- if the letters match, that's something to be concerned about; condition- zinc and aluminum do corrode in the ground- if something is supposed to be 'ground-dug' and it's in good condition, that's suspect.; 'Desirable' units- LAH and other well-known units were smaller than the average Heer Infantry-Division so their tags should be significantly less common- but they're not; Stamp clarity, depth, etc.- the blood group was added for each man usually LONG after the tags were marked with the unit- if all the stampings look about the same, that's cause for suspicion too.

    I'm sorry to introduce doubt about your tags- I really do hope they're real
