    Last Operational Sturmgeschütz in CASSINO

Hi all Italian Campaign enthusiasts !

I have this document for years and I was thinking to share it with you.

Leutnant Walter VOGT was killed on the 1st September of 1944 in Solarola (not sure) (Bologna). He was an Artilleryman on all way.

On 1st November 1939, he was incorporated in the 2.Ers-Battr.Argt. 33.

Then he went trough different artillery units and on the 29th October 1942, he joined the Sturmgesch.-Abt. 177.

He fought in Russia and he get the EKII on 16.07.41 and then the Sturmabzeichen on 10.09.41. Then he fought in Italy. He received the EKI after he was killed.

One of the most interesting unit is the Stumrgesch.-Abt. 242 that he joined on the 21st of March 1943 until his death on the 1st September of 1944. The battery is unknwon for me and I probably contact the WAST one day.

Photos of paratroopers from the II./FJR 3 with a assault gun crew of the 242 are know by everybody. Just have a look on the book « FJR 3 » written by K.J. Peters (Bender Publishing). He was belonging to the last operational Sturmgeschütz in Cassino ? I will probably know it one day.

Very interesting Jean-Yves! The battle entry dates correspond with the 3rd battle for Cassino. But, it seems to mention the second battle in the Wehrpass. From a "reserve" on the 20th of March to 4 days of battle with the 242nd at Cassino...fascinating!

I decide to continue this thread because i get some new infos concerning
the location where Lt. VOGT was KIA.

My friend Alberto BENUZZI from La Gotica Ritrovata Association found
the exact location of VOGT's death.

SOLAROLA is a very small medieval village (5 houses and 1 church) at
30 km from BOLOGNA. An old man from the village did remember that there was a German's Command post there.

                          Fascinating Jean~Yves, what a great Wehrpass. I esp. like pgs. 12 & 13!
Good detective work too, a good bonus to find his place of death and burial.

                          Regards
