Looks unissued or only worn for a very short time. The unit had an Ersatz-Bataillon, so it seems likely to me that if it were issued that it'd have been so before or right at the beginning of the war. The serial number, however might be a little high for that, so my guess is that it's a 'stock' replacement that was simply never issued.

              Here's the unit information:

              Grenz-Infanterie-Regiment 124

              1. Aufstellung:

Infanterie-Division (14. Welle); wurde ersetzt; 15.5.1942 Stab III. und 9. Kompanie zur Aufstellung
              Radfahrabteilung 72 verwandt und ersetzt; Grenadier-Regiment 124 seit 15.10.1942; 10.11.1942 das
III. Bataillon aufgelöst; 2.3.1944 nach Ausbruch aus dem Kessel von Tscherkassy in
Hrubieszow/Generalgouvernement aufgefrischt (aus der Division Generalgouvernement).

              2. Gliederung:
              1939 I. 1-4, II. 5-8, III. 9-12, 13, 14

                The dogtag number is o.k.

The german army had no dogtags in the peace. At the beginning of the war, all members got a dogtag, the members of the Grenz infanterie Regiment 124, too. (They got Grz Inf Rgt 124 dogtags and no Ersatz dogtags) When the first soldiers are fallen, the replacement soldiers who join to the regiment, have replacement dogtags. (my dear... my bad english... sorry.)

So this number ist the 227th soldier ho got tag dogtag at the beginning of the war ! (Or later)

Replacement soldiers who entered service once the war had started would wear discs from the Ersatz-Bataillon though Fronti- only those who were serving at the time the discs were issued would have received one marked with the field unit, and I would doubt that a single Kompanie had 227 men since the normal size isn't more than 150 or so. I understand that units kept replacement discs for those lost, and they were the same as those issued to serving troops- i.e. with the field unit information.

Or were things a little different right at the beginning and I just don't know about it?
