Some time ago I bought this id disk. It supposed to be for a SS schütze of Langemarck. Does anybody know if this disc is original and for what unit it was? As far as I know there was a SS division Langemarck and a sturmbrigade. Hop somebody can help me.

Hi Volkbert,
I've been seriously collecting Erkennungsmarken for about a year-and-a-half now (I have nearly 100 of them) and I've learned quite a bit- and one of the main things is that 99% of SS discs for sale anywhere are fakes. This one, unfortunately, has all the characteristics I avoid- no wear around the neck cord holes, the condition is odd- I'll bet all the edges are still fairly sharp- even the holes (a disc that has been worn tends to end up with more rounded edges), and the lettering is very suspect- specifically the blood group letter. These were added as the disc was issued- i.e. after the tags were stamped with the unit name. So, in 99.9% of cases, the letter is different than those that comprise the unit mark- and it's often either a lighter or heaver strike than the rest of the stampings. Yours looks quite uniform and leads me to wonder if it was stamped all at the same time from a blank someplace in Eastern Europe... I also don't seen an Umlaut over the 'U' in Schuetzen- that's an obvious mistake (unless it's just the scan and the Umlaut is there). The letter forms themselves look very odd too.
Of course unless one obtains stuff like this from the original owner or his immediate family, it's virtually impossible to be absolutely sure of authenticity- and so it's up to experience and opinion. Me, I'd avoid this one. The likelihood it's a fake is just too strong. Sorry.
Matt
