How to research a SS dogtag?

    Hi!

So a week ago I picked up my first SS dogtag, reading "SS-T.Pz.Jäg.Ers.Kp.7" which I guess would be the replacement company of the SS panzerjäger abteilung in the Totenkopf division. It also has the number 331 on it, which I guess is the soldiers number, so what I wounder is: Can anyone give me any hints on how I could research it? Is it possible to track it down to a singel soldier etc?

    Best regards: Lasse.

I know photos sometimes play tricks so..With a close exam ,,does the tag look stamped over the ageing / pitting?

        Hi!

No I dont think it looks like that, theres even some pitting in some of the numbers. I think that it might have been cleaned, but thats it.

        Best regards:

Well, looks like you have a common St.Petersburg fantasy fake. I would suggest to research a bit before buying tag. Actually this unit never existed. Checking that prior buying would save you some bucks.
I don't think if I have helped much, but I tought if we speak about researching dogtags we need to start from basics.
          Regards
          Al

Yeah, unfortunately that's definitely a fake. Those weird squished-top '3's are a dead-giveaway. Sorry Lasse. Al's right too that the unit didn't exist. It appears that the faker tried to make a hybrid of SS and Heer units- 'Infanterie-Panzerjäger-Ersatz-Kompanie' was a real unit type, and many of the SS-Totenkopf-Division's units were denoted with a 'T', but there was no such thing as an SS-Totenkopf-Panzerjäger-Ersatz-Kompanie.

One should ALWAYS get knowledgeable opinions before buying any SS Erkennungsmarke...

I hope you can return it!

              Matt
