Name changes are not unknown. Sometimes names were "Germanised". A famous example is quoted here:

Looks like your man was born in Silesia and had a Polish sounding surname, which is not unusual as this was a border area with a mixed population. As I suspected, he later "Germanised" it

looks like he carried on after the war as apolice man would he have been like the police man in band of bros the one at the crossing checking the cars and lorries

Nice interesting group Doug Many Policemen did carry on in the same job after a quick background check by the Allies. Law and order needed to be maintained in the newly occupied areas of Germany held by Britain and the US.
