    SB/WP Situation at the SOS

The Soldbuch/Wehrpass situation was pretty good at the SOS if you had the time to look. I was there on Thursday and Friday and scored about eight different books. There were other great ones there, but the prices were out of sight - almost borderline ridiculous - so I suppose the dealers certainly must have taken them home with them. Anyway, I made one major score. A Soldbuch, Wehrpass and driver's license for a member of Werkstattkompanie (workshop/repair compnay) of schwere Panzer-Abteilung 506, the only Army "Tiger" (later King Tiger) unit deployed on the West Front. The last entry in the Soldbuch is 16 December 1944, the day the Ardennes Offensive began.

I erased out the name on the documents to protect the innocent! Actually, I learned the soldier is still alive. I wrote him a letter and I am hoping for a reply soon. Oddly enough, he still lives in the same town as he did during the war.

Yancy, there weren't many Soldbuecher for "the common soldier" to be found at the SOS. Actually, I only found one for a member of schnelle Abteilung 510 who was killed in August 1944 in the West. There were lots of SS, but as I stated previoulsy, they were ridiculously high in price - and not worth it. I saw a nice night fighter set (Soldbuch/Wehrpass) for a pilot who was thoroughly trained, but was killed on his first sortie for $850. I also saw a nice para Wehrpass/Soldbuch group for a soldier who was killed in the West. This was $750 and was bought by a friend.
