    SS Soldbuch Questions/Help

    Hello Gents,
Being I am not really a soldbuch collector, I have a line on one from a friend of mine to an ss sturmann with photo. The cover is the standard army style but on the bottom of the cover, W=SS is printed. The photo looks like it is glued in as there are no staples or rivets and also there are no stamps on the photo. Has anyone ever seen this before? When I get it I will post pics. Thanks for any help on this...Jeff

    Hi
It has been seen before, but be very aware. As a rule a photo in a Soldbuch, must always have a stamp from the unit where the person is serving in. The stamp in a confirm, that the person on the photo is the same that signed the Soldbuch
If any doubt post photos of the book here and you will know for sure.

I agree, I think the soldbuch itself is oke, but that the photo is later attached to it. I am not sure about the stamp on the front. I never saw a stamp like that, but perhaps other collectors have.

            Hi Jeff,

I think its a tricky one. As the photo has no corner overstamps I think you have to accept it 'MAY' have been added to 'sex' up the book. I have in my collection an SS Soldbuch to a pre war soldier, his job is listed as 'soldat' and other documents I have indicate his service started in 1937. The cover is the Army type and is stamped in full 'Waffen SS'. I am surmising that this was one of the early issues from 1938(I think) I am sure Ian will correct me if I am wrong, when the SS went from the truppenausweiss to the soldbuch system. Therefore there is precedence for a 'W-SS' or 'Waffen SS' stamp that may be period applied.

            I hope this helps

I can't post pictures of my book, I am in Iraq at this time but will do so on my return.

            regards

            Mark

              Hi
I would defently something rotten here.
The Soldbuch might be ok, but the cover does not belong to the Soldbuch.
I never saw a Wehrmacht cover with pages from a WSS Soldbuch.

I think some one had an original WSS Soldbuch wanted to add value to it, by giving it a new cover with photo. If the cover have been faked, maybe some of the entries have too.

I would stay away from this one, unless the price is that of a Waffen SS Soldbuch without cover

              AJ

Necker,Mark thanks for your response. The only thing that raises my eyebrows is there is no evidence that there was ever a photo there before(no staples, stamps) so IMO this is a good sign that the photo may be original to the book but I will have to wait until I get it to get a closer look...Cheers...Jeff

Thanks AJ but I have seen many SS soldbuchs over the years with this style cover, it will be very easy to tell if the cover is replaced...Cheers...Jeff

                    Jeff,

What unit is the soldier to whom the SB belongs?

                      Hi Jeff
You must rember wrong. I never saw a original Waffen Soldbuch with its cover replaced by a Wehrmacht cover. It's common to see a entire Wehrmacht Soldbuch used for an SS Soldier, not a mix of 2 Soldbuchs.

Im still convinced, that the Soldbuch shown is bring together piece

I have to agree that it looks a bit dodgy, with both that photo which looks like it was stuck in recently and also on the first page it looks like some tape has been torn from the spine but there is no evidence of the tape to the inside cover.

Mark I am not sure what unit, but I think the last entry was a training and replacement battalion,my friend was not able to read it right...cheers...Jeff
