SS Soldbuch Auschwitz?

I was just looking through my SS soldbuch as you do and came across this .It says SS T Sturmbahn KL Liononitz and then Aushwitz 0/4 .And a stamp in the back that has Kommandatur K L Aushwitz (spelt in old German).Do you think this guy spent some time as a guard in the camp ? Rob

It is Monowitz and not Liononitz. And the right spelling (also in old german) is Auschwitz.

During 1944 approximately 10.000 soldiers from the Luftwaffe (ground personnel) were transfered to the KZ service. They replaced KZ guards who were then sent to the front.

These Lufwaffe soldiers became available as the frontlines were coming closer and therefore the supply lines became a lot shorter, needing less soldiers.

These Luftwaffe soldiers were mostly issued with replacement SS Soldbuchs, although I have seen and still have a number of Luftwaffe Soldbuchs with KZ entries. Hence the passphoto in Luftwaffe uniform.

I don't think that they were very happy with their transfer.

I think he was from the historic town of Hamlyn as there were 2 folded pictures of the place along with a pay slip in the back .Rob.
