Thanks for the comments. when I bid on it I obviously knew he was a RK winner with Pz Regt 6. I'd also managed to find out he was killed while commanding Pz Regt 3 of 2. Panzerdivision in Normandy.
However, the fact he was commander of Pz Abt 129 and was wounded in Stalingrad on 10th January 1943 (and also picked up a Tank Destruction Strip while there) was a bonus. He must have been one of the last to be flown out - his rank and, I dare say, his RK would have ensured he was given priority.
He was killed on 7th August 1944 in Normandy during an artillery bombardment while conducting an O group. Quite a number of other regimental officers were also killed and wounded.

This photo has been taken from the 3. Panzerdivision history. This photo was taken before the attack on Merville, France on 27th May 1940. Opposition was provided by the British 6th Infantry Brigade containing the DLI, Royal Berks and RWF - this comes from the German history so I haven't yet been able to confirm this nor the battalion numbers.
Our man is on the left and was commanding 2./ Panzer Regiment 6 at this time. The infantry are from III./ Schtz. Regt. 3.
Edit..obviously our man is on the right not left!Attached FilesLast edited by Gary T; 10-07-2005, 12:34 AM.
