    Wehrpass KIA in Stalingrad

I would like to share with you my newest Wehrpass. Although it's a relative simple wehrpass, it's details make it IMO a very interesting one.

From the 5th of august 1942 he served in the 3./Pj. Grenn. Rgt. 21.

    Do I read that correct?

Although he received the Panzer-Kampfabzeichen, I assume it's not a panzer crew member. This is because there are no entrees of training on panzers. On page 20 one can see that he has been trained on Gewehr 98, L.M.G. (Leichtes Machinengewehr), O8, MG34, S.Gr.W.34 (schwere Granat Werfer 34?), Machinenpistole. IMO he must been a panzerjager.

Then I have another question. On page 32 it is written with a pencil: EINSATZ IN RUSSLAND. I know that there were several occasions were Wehrpass entrees were written with a pencil. I assume this has been done, so that in a later time, this could be replaced by an supplementary sheet. Am I correct in this?

The unit is 3./ Panzergrenadier Regiment 21.

He's a panzergrenadier...i.e. an infantryman in a panzer division. The Panzerkampfabzeichen will be the version in bronze. Tank crews got the silver version.

Interestingly he is not listed on the German war graves nor in the 24 Pz.Div. history as falling on that day, however not all are listed!

On 29.9.1942 37 men and 2 officers were killed, 3 officers and 91 men were wounded also 8 men were missing from the Division.
The Division was position at Stalingrad north.

Possibly he should be reported as they appear to have no info on him, however I believe this site is constantly being updated with new info.

He is not listed as missing, however he could also have no known war grave so that could be why he has been left out.

The WASt will no doubt have records on him.

The Volksbund online site has been constantly updated over the last few years. In general all KIA's in countries with official German military cemeteries are on there...but as 80% of casualties in WW2 took place on the Eastern Front there are still hundreds 000's not yet on there.
