EK 2 entry Saar Offensive

Hi Guys,


Bought this soldbuch mainly for the early EK 2 citation. Thought he was awarded the EK2 for the Poland campaign but after some research I had some new insights.

Willy Breidbach was serving in the IR58, 6 Infanterie Division, and was based along the French border. On september 7 in 1939 the French troops launched Operation Saar. During this attack or the German counter attack Willy Breidbach earned his EK2.

Later on he served in Russia & Ukraine with IR240 and earned the following awards:

- ISA
- VWA Schwarz
- VWA Silber
- Ost Medal

How common is it to find EK 2 citation's for the Saar Offensive?

Great EK entry. These Saar/Sitzkreig EK awards are uncommon but not terribly rare. They do come around from time to time as some were for the initial offensive while others are for periodic skirmishes over the winter. I have three or four EK documents in my collection from this time.

Very interesting! I also have a late December '39 EK2 doc in my collection...always assumed it was just a late award for Poland, but I'll have to dig it out and double check the unit.
