    Wehrpass entry Translation probs

    Hi all
    Can anybody translate an entry in a wehrpass on page 11 wich reads something like this and please excuse my German
    LANDESCHUKEN = ERL?=BATL 12.3 KOMPANIE MAINTZ
    at the top of the page it is abreviated to
    3.kp.lds.schtz.erl.btl.12

    also on the last page(51) there is a pre printed and the blanks filled in statement wich mentions espionage,sabotage,landesverrat etc
    Does anyone know what his occupation was and decipher the entry on the back page
    Thanks to everyone in anticipation
    Gary

    Hi Gary

    I think that should be "Landesschutzen Ersatz Battalion 12, 3 Kompanie Mainz

    Mainz is a large German city.

    I think the spionage thing you mention is just an entry that they have had some lessons about this, you see this entry quite often.

      Hi Gary,

      I agree with Tim's response and would add the following -
      Landesschuetzen were roughly the equivalent of National Guardists who were mobilized to do rear-area duties in occupied countries. They were mostly older guys who were not fit enough for front-line infantry units. For clues about his specific duties look at the pages for weapons training and special courses. If he just has small arms training then he was just a common foot soldier.
      His unit was a training unit for Landesschuetzen so he may not have left Mainz until the war came to him in 1945. Mainz was also heavily bombed so he probably assisted in tidying up after raids.

      The security statement in the back is common and just signifies that he received training on that topic. It has no direct bearing on his occupation however it is natural that anyone handling classified documents would be more likely to have that entry in his Wehrpass. At a Landesschuetzen unit, the "classified materials" would be along the lines of unit rosters, alert instructions, and signal codes - nothing too exotic.
