    SS Dog Tag Question

I have the opportunity to purchase an SS dog tag in average condition. It is steel with some pitting and minor rust. All runes and letters/numbers are readable and intact. I do not have a picture, so I hope you can help me. Can someone give me some quick advice on how to tell if it is original vs. fake. Also, what is the approximate value?

    Hi,

Well given that the vast, vast majority of SS discs out there for sale are fakes, chances are that the one you're looking at is too. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to determine the authenticity of a German identity disc so without an image there's not a lot we can do to help. There are a few common types of fakes and if you can match the lettering of yours to one of these, it's a fake: http://home.netcarrier.com/~crangster/DogTags/ I can't find the actual website, but this is a link to all the images that are there and I plus I dare say most other Erkennungsmarke collectors here consider to all be bad.

Also, if you post the exact markings- punctuation and all- we might be able to recognize any problems.
