Young boy Soldbuch, late war, 1 P.D.

The war was entering its last year in Europe and all hands were needed on deck so here we have a very young boy who was thrown into the cauldron of madness that was Europe in 1944.

Josef Mitterlehner was born in Krüzen (Austria) on October 17th, 1.926, he was roman catholic and (normal at his age) single and work in the agriculture.

With a little more than 17 and half years he was conscripted into the Wehrmacht after being registered in the W.M.A. Linz 2 by the Stammkompanie Pz. Gren. Ers. u. Ausb. Btl. 2 in Mähr Weisskirchen on April 29th, 1.944.

His training took till beginning of September 1.944 when he was transfer to Marschkompanie Pz. Gren. Ers. U. Ausb. Btl. 2 to be sent to the front. He received an Eisernen Portion on September 3rd and his second security check was stamped by this unit on the 1st.

Here is when things get tangled, normally he will end in one of the two Panzer Regiments belonging to the 2 Panzer Division, but he ended in the 5./Panzergrenadier Regiment 113 from the 1 Panzer Division.

His service in the frontline was short as he was wounded around October 24th, 1.944 in Hungary, probably in the combats north of Debrecen around Nagy Kallo. At this time the average strength of the companies in the II./Panzergrenadier Regiment 113 was 50 soldiers.

Now started his peregrinate from hospital to hospital:

On October 24th in Feldlazarett mot. 652 by grenade splitters till October 27th
On October 30th in Reservelazarett Badehofplz. Badgastein
On January 23rd in Reservelazarett Perg/Obd
On April 7th in Reservelazarett Perg, Teillazarett Grein Obd

There he met the end of the war, probably surrender to the Americans who liberated the city on May 5th just to handle it to the Russian on the 8th.

Maybe he was just short of two months at the front, but enough to won to medals:

On November 17th, 1.944 the Wound Badge in black
On November 21st, 1.944 the Panzer Assault Badge in bronze

Once more time the proof of a childhood and teenage time of a boy broken by the war. At least he was one of the luckies who exit the war alive.

Yes, from my favorite division and not one of those late ones with no combat awards and the little mystery about his change of destination.

Anyone can read what is written in red above his only leave?

      Thanks

I read: Urlaub am 1.9.44 abgebrochen. Vacation stopped on 1.9.44.

Thanks, this is putting some light into the facts, looks like he was recalled when on leave just to be sent to the frontline to replenish the depleted units and he ended where he was more needed, not with the 2 Panzer Division as normally you will expect from soldiers trained by his previous unit.

With this change he ended in Hungary instead in the sunny France.
