Here we have the story of two common german men during the Third Reich period.
First we have Gunther Hoth who was born in Berlin on July 2nd, 1.912 and he was a merchant . As normal he was incorporated into the Wehrmacht, date unknown but went to serve with the 1./Schützen (later Panzergrenadier) Regiment 113 as his sole combat unit for the duration of his war. We know he was single and he behave good enough to receive the Panzer Assault badge in bronze on November 15th, 1.941 and the Ostmedaille on August 1st, 1.942.
Unfortunately for him his luck run out on November 14th, 1.943, a Sunday in Ukraine, in the fights around Kornin (now Kornyn) where he was killed in a small village called Sapaduja (despite a lot of efforts I have been not able to pinpoint the exact location)
Second we have a youngster Ernst Muller who was born in Langenholzer on July 14th, 1.919 and he studied on the Volksschule for 8 years and was conscripted on January 10th, 1.940. He started serving in the sister regiment, the Schüte Regiment 1 in the III Battalion and 1 Kp. from June 22nd, 1.940 till May 31st, 1.942 when was transfer to……. yes the 1./Schützen (later Panzergrenadier) Regiment 113. Prior his transfer he was promoted to Obergefreiter and was wounded in August 14th, 1.941, but never left his combat unit and was awarded both the PABiB and the EK II on December 24th, 1.941. Later he received the WBiB and the Ostmedaille both on August 1st, 1.942.
The same day he was promoted to Unteroffizier. He was married on September 24th, 1.942.
They served together since he was transferred to the 113 and, probably, cross patches even know each other and sure he mourned the death of Hoth.
Otto luck also run out on December 9th, 1.943, a Thursday, when he was killed in a village named Iskra, close to Malin.
Otto received the CCCiB posthumously on January 4th, 1.944.
Two men, born one in a small town, the other in the big city, both answered the call and both behave in combat and, sadly, both paid the ultimate price.
