This is my latest arrival, Soldbuch and Borschützenschein of Johann Schönegg.
After training in various Borschützenschule he was assigned to 12.Staffel of the Kampfgeschwader 76 in May 1942 for 3 months, then in August 1942 he was assigned to the 5.Staffel based in Tazinskaya(SEE MAP1).
He was the Gunner in a JU88 bomber and According to another member of the same Staffel Heimo Nussbaumer(SEE BOOK PAGES POSTED) they were Bombing the Famous and Important Tractor Factory, the Big Grain Elevator, the Women s Antiaircraft on the volga Islands and the Ferries at Night crossing the Volga!!
After Bombing Stalingrad for a monthJohann earned the Frontflugspange in Bronze on the 7th of Sptember 1942.
On the 8th He boarded his JU88 for another mission to Stalingrad with his brand new decoration but His plane was shot down by Russian fighters. (Thanks Ian).
After crashing on the ground, Of the 4 crewmembers of the JU88 A-4 type only the Pilot Flugzeugführer Feldwebel HANS MAURESCHAT managed to survive his wounds
The Beobachter Gefreiter Berthold Weissberger died on the Crash while Johann and Bordfunker Unteroffizier Georg Scholz survived the crash but were both retrieved and transported to the 71.Infanterie Division Hauptverbandplatz in Gontschara that was just a few Kilometers outside Stalingrad.(SEE ATTACHED MAP OF STALINGRAD ON 8.9.1942)
Both Died that day from their wounds unfortunately and today they are Buried in the Main German Cemetery in Stalingrad based in Rossoschka. Johann was posthumously awarded the EK2 on 28.9.1942.
His Borschützenschein has a Signature of II./K.G.76 commander Volprecht Konrad Riedesel Freiherr zu Eisenbach, Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub holder and was awarded the Ritterkreuz for "As Hauptmann operational from 28th June till 16th July 1942 during the summer offensive against Voronesh, operations in the Don bend against Kalatsch, above the lower Don towards the Caucasus. From 10th August bombardment operations against Stalingrad and the Caucasus."
