I've always thought it amazing that soldiers were still fighting so ferociously when everything was clearly lost. And that awards were still being processed through regular channels. Or were they?

I wrote a very brief article (in Volume 4, Number 4 of the International Militaria Collector) called "Until the bitter end....", and showed a couple of pieces of paperwork (from mid-April, 1945, including one from the bunker under the Reichskanzlei on April 15) which demonstrated that the official award process was still very much in operation even at those late dates.
There are, of course, also disputed very late awards made by commanders, without "legal" authority, and these have not been recognized by several researchers and authors as legitimate (even though they may certainly have been richly deserved). I have seen, but was unable to acquire, a very nice document trail from Kesselring in which he wanted sanction for his local award of RK's and higher grades, but was denied.
