P&L Spain Cross in silver- interesting!

    Hi Guys,

I thought I would show this one in it's own thread as it is a rather unusual example.

It has been post war stamped twice with L/18 marks, as are 3 other crosses I obtained from the same collection but ignoring that addition I wanted to show you the eagles on this cross.

Originally I thought it must have been damaged and post war repaired with a Souval pair of eagles or similar but having examined it closely there is no damage that would indicate a repair and the 2 anomolous eagles have the same silver finish as the rest of the cross. The base metal is different as can be seen from the wear.

It appears the cross was actually made this way and they must have run out of the correct eagles so they have used 2 Luftwaffe civilian stickpin eagles which are almost the same size and placed them in opposing corners to balance the cross- you wouldn't notice at all unless you looked closely!

Notice also the similarity in the fairly crude head and feather design between the 2 birds- P&L products are not of massive quality!

    Hope you find it interesting!

Here's an illustration (from Doehle) of a cross with alternating eagles.

        Interesting oddity there for sure.

I have a theory that, early on, manufacturers did not know with certainty which eagle to use, so you see pieces like Patrick's (and the illustration from Doehle) with alternating eagles or, as in the case of the award to next-of-kin, the "cover art" for the box being a cross with all downtail eagles. This might explain the presence on some early S&L barter boards of SK's with downtail eagles (even though perhaps finished later with pins marked "4').
