HG Division EK 2nd Class Document

    Hello,
A recent pickup, a 1939 EK 2nd Class document awarded to a member of the Hermann Göring Division. It is signed by Wilhelm Schmalz. I have wanted an HG EK document for some time.

    Regards,
    Jody

Great document, Jody and a fine addition to your collection. This is when Schmalz had taken over temporary command from Conrath and the award is almost definitely Anzio/Nettuno related.

The Date of this document is during the Gotic Line bataille.

              Few miles from my house.

              Nice document, great add.

              Congrats.

Hi Max - I'm not expert on HG units, but my understanding is that the division was relieved from the fighting at Anzio around this time and sent into reserve (and eventually sent to France for refitting). Do you have evidence that the unit, or elements of it, were sent to the Gothic line between the Anzio fighting and when they went into reserve?

                Thanks,
                Brian

                  Hi Brian,
I read this info for Fallschirmjaeger Panzer Division "Hermann Goering" here :

                  http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...eTruppenLw.htm

In April was sent en reserve OKW, as you correct wrote, near Bologna / Gotic Line; the map shown the position.

Thats are my two cents, and I hope that help.

Yes, so they were sent back and put in reserve. There was no major fighting in this area at this time, unless I'm mistaken.

When units were removed from the front and sent into reserve, it was a prime time to reorganize and process paperwork and similar that was not easily done during frontline fighting. In this case, HG would have been processing awards earned during the Anzio campaign. You'll see that the date on EK documents is most often the date of the Vorschlagsliste and not the date of the actions. So, in this case, a recommendation would have been written and dated during a time the unit was in reserve, just days after it was pulled from the line. I'd be very surprised if this was not an Anzio related award.
