Could you please show any more photos of the KM badges? I see the Deumer Minesweeper, Destroyer and Blockade Breaker but I can't make out the makers of the others.
It's interesting to see this topic re-visited after so long (so everyone can argue again).
On Manteuffel, I believe his staff had a field set made and that S&L copied it because he was a popular guy. The elongated swords on his set already existed and were standardly available from S&L (and perhaps others, too) as a device for medal bars.
Brian, on the earlier board with with 3 SK's w/o swords, I believe the gold was a mistake left over from earlier days and probably some worker soldered on a pin (likely marked "4" ) to stick it on a board for, as you said, symmetry. (That's a guess since are are no "rear" photos of the badges in the black and white boards photo.) When the SK was introduced, there was confusion about the design (see the cover of the box for the Next-of-Kin award and the cross with alternating eagles as published by Doehle, an example of which was shown here by Patrick not too long ago). Wouldn't surprise me a bit if someone at S&L jumped the gun and started making a few gold w/o swords pieces, before some supervisor told him "Hey, dumbass, they authorized a bronze with and w/o swords, a silver with and w/o swords, and a gold with swords, but not a gold w/o swords".
God only knows what was still sitting around in the Ludenscheid factories at the end. Never bombed and pretty prolific in their production, you can bet it was a lot.

When I get them in hand I will properly photograph everything.
