    Eugen Schmidhäussler envelope with EK2

    Hello,
I bought this at a show a couple of weeks ago. The gentleman I got it from said he had bought the entire set many years ago from a veteran (or his family, I forget now), so no definite proof that it's always been together but at least a possibility.

In searching the forum, I found little info on these envelopes or crosses, though that may have been due to the numerous misspellings of the maker name. What I did find seems to say that the envelopes, when found, never have a marked cross in them and the EKs found with them most often appear to be standard S&L types. I'm completely useless at studying the fine details of the various EK frames and core types, so wanted to post it here to see what y'all have to say about it.
    Thank you,
    Dale

Thanks, Sanya. If I understand correctly, Schmidthäußler sold EK2s in their own envelopes but the EKs themselves came from other makers. It seems like a long way from Pforzheim to Nurnberg to get EKs from Lauer, but I guess the amount of contracting and subcontracting was substantial enough to make it possible.

            with this I fully agree

... but IMO Schmidthäußler produced the prototype one-piece magnetic crosses EK2-1939, which did not enter into mass production. I refer to the article of Dietrich Maerz „The very Last Iron Cross 2. Class” in „International Medal Collector” Vol. 3, Nr. 3/2012

Thanks, Jarek. Too bad I didn't find one of the prototypes you mention, but I'm happy with the set as it is even if Schmidthäußler didn't make the cross. Lauer crosses are pretty common but as I understand it the envelopes are not that often to find.

Good to know they're not so common, thanks for that info. I do have a 14 marked Ost and KVK2 but no Lauer marked EK2s, but at least I now have an unmarked one.
