Why not? Would not be the first! A conversational piece, a paper weight? But I should not speculate. The only thing I can say for sure is that it is not for a genuine Knights Cross!

When I started this thread, my only agenda was to establish the use of a pantograph in the production of dies, since the photo series from Deschler failed to account for that properly. You didn’t object to my conclusion this was indeed the case, hence I assume we are in agreement on that part.

The reason for me bringing up the ST.&L. dies was not to question your theory, it was only to confirm the possibility of repairing an existent working die. “A theory has to fit reality and must constantly be proven against reality”. I couldn’t agree more, but let’s face it, your entire theory (right or wrong) is based on the assumption of a repaired die. As of yet, I still haven’t seen any account for how this was achieved. With plausible explanations of this process, I would gladly put this topic to rest. In my world, things don’t revolve around KC’s and the possible findings here will get me a better understanding of how other decorations were produced.

have a read of the old threads. There were a lot of explanations how a die could be repaired (and also an explanation of the dent row being weld splatter - what else could it be?). A repaired die is also the only working explanation of the multiple fine fingerprints on both A and B Type which could not be replicated otherwise, i.e. by using the famous mother die.

Sure, there were members who said a die could not be repaired. But they had no explanation for all the other facts. That is not very helpfull.

But again, for me it is no longer important. The reality of existing pieces has proven the time line and the border between good and bad.

if a die chipped or cracked you would have to re heat the die to soften it grind out the damage re weld the die then re engrave it again and re harden it then its a strong risk of breaking again so probably would not be done .Far better easy and as cheap to remake the die

That is all very nice and sound perfectly reasonable - in general.
However, it does not even remotely explain the topic of the A and B die of S&L since it does not take into consideration all the other facts. Again, as hard as it sounds to newcomers to the topic, it is not about whether "a die" can be repaired or not, it is about explaining the A- and B-Types of S&L in a way that explains all facetts of the topic.

Dietrich, I did follow the debate in 2006, but I don’t recall were to look for the specific discussions of a possible repair. I also have your book, an excellent read and great detective work and analysis. With that said, I don’t think I’ll get a plausible explanation for how a die can be repaired, hence I’ll look elsewhere for information and leave it at that. Thanks to all you guys who bothered to present an opinion and Dietrich, that goes for you too.
