    Unmarked Steinhauer & Luck

    Hi guys,

My son (aged 7) has started collecting WW2 German awards. He has just acquired an iron cross 1st class from Helmut Weitze it is unmarked and manufactured by Steinhauer & Luck. Any idea what period of WW2 an unmarked version is likely to be from?

    Thanks

    Pat

      Hi guys,

Looks like that maybe was not the right question?

Any one able to give some idea of the date of this EK1 ?

      Any help gratefully appreciated.

      Thanks
      Pat

        Hi Pat,

Cool that your son is into history.

Your reverse photo is not very good, and it is from the reverse that we would ordinarily try to fix a period of manufacture for a cross. Unmarked EKs are generally from the first half of the war before the numbering systems were instituted.

In any event it looks like a very nice original in an original case.
        Best regards,

                    That's a very nice S&L.

I would say it's probably the last type made before the introduction of the PKZ numbering system, which was in the end of 1942/beginning 1943. So I would call this a nice mid-war piece.

Earlier S&L EK1s were also unmarked but had a different pin type. The very earliest ones also had non-magnetic cores (brass, I think). Then there was this type with a new pin style. After this, the number stamps were instituted.
                    Best regards,
                    Streptile
