Peter, you mean black paint on the beading? I have looked very closely at mine, and dont see any paint on the frame, and it also appears to have frosting. I do agree that it is a late(r) version.
The ones you observed with the paint on frame (or beading?), where these one piece or two piece construction?
Later today I'll dig it out and take a picture with my camera instead of the scanner. The scanner tends to distort colors at times
