Can you provide clear images of the maker mark.

If it is L/15 it will be Otto Schickle.

If it is L15 it will be a late war Fred. Orth

I dont have the capability to take a clear photo of the maker mark at the moment but it does have the slash.

It is neither a Schickle nor a F. Orth - it is a fake.

Dietrich, please explain why this is a fake? It would help me in the future.

            Thanks

              Jamie,

the most direct and comprehensive answer is this: it is a fake because it is not an original.

Many collectors make the mistake to study the fakes, wanting to know what is wrong. That is a very futile exercise since the amount of fakes is growing and would require constant learning and updating.
Studying the originals is far easier. There is only a limited amount of originals and to study them is not that tough.
I can only recommend, if you are really interesred in learning, to buy the book “The War Merit Cross 1.Class and Higher Grades”. Identifying orders and medals not only requires to learn the physical appereance, but also the knowledge of requirements, award procedures, markings, materials, ...

                Thanks for thaf.

Firstly, I do intend buying your book but I had the little matter of a mint Heer dagger to clear up first.

I do my best to study originals, I have Gordons book and I look at kvk dna often.

I just wondered about this cross as you will be well aware of the L15 L/15 debate along with the Souval claw and the Floch fake. Those were the reasons for me asking.

                Best regards

                Jamie
