Nice IC box with a rather unusual inlay

This nice Zimmermann IC came recently my way. The box inlay got a little frame.
Do inlays like this exist or did the owner some embellishment?
Opinions are welcome.

Thanks Stefan for your qualified answer. That fits with the Citation document what was isssued 20.April 1945. Definately a very late war issue . The cross a 20 Zimmermann is literally unworn.

I wonder was it common to make awarding's for distinguished soldiers in World War 2 take place on 20 April, the birthday of Hitler.

As far as I know, it was a common in Imperial Germany to present an extra amount of awards to distinguished soldiers on 27 January, to honour the Kaisers birthday.

Yes, it was common e.g. for war merit crosses (large amount given on 30.01., 20.04. or other important days for the NS-party), but not common for bravery awards like the IC, which had to be given as close as possible after the deed.

Yes, Peter is right in that you will see "regime' dates on documents, but mostly KVK awards. The most common are January 30th, April 20th and September 1st. This one is likely a coincidence in that I'm not used to seeing "regime' dates on EK awards. He likely distinguished himself in support of the KG. Perhaps as a former airman he served in the ad hoc unit's staff while it was fighting (or retreating) in Austria. Or, he could have been killed weeks earlier (in a similar role) and awarded the EK1 posthumously (although there is no record of him in the Volksbund db).

To Brian R.: I know from the son who sold me the estate that his father survived the war. I have also his Wehrpass where it says that he was from April 18th.1945 in the VII Armeekorps Bork.
