EK1 1939 Spange

Hello friends,

I was out on Sunday looking around some junk shops on the South Coast UK, & I found this on the side in a cabinet.

When I first looked at it, I thought Mayer straight away?

It had the price of £10 Sterling on it. I asked if they would accept £5, they said £7, so I brought it.

Once I got it home & had a chance to really examine it, I am certain it is a 1939 EK1 Spange by B. H. Mayer.

Hard to photograph in the light with surface reflection etc.

So I am sticking it on here for opinions.

All help is much appreciated.

nice to see that bargains are still out there every time I look I see sky high prices al I have picked up a few bargains along the way but this find tops it

I did not have my loup on me & I do not know these at all. I was buying it very blind at the time, so I could have come home with a £5 badge for £10. The detail reminded me of seeing a Mayer in the past & only in photographs.

And besides this, it was in a very low key/low end antique junk shop. I was actually looking for old watch parts at the time. All these shops barter anyway.

It was amongst some real cheap Third Reich copies.
All for sale for £5 to £20 each.

What should I have done, said "Hold on, this might be worth a lot of money so here is £500"?

Lastly, the amount of pieces both myself & my father brought over the years, only to be told it is all junk, think I deserve a break every once in a while.

Think the karma was in me finding it by being in the right place at the right time.

Now I know it is good, & when passing the shop in future, I will drop off the extra £3 to restore the balance.

Do I tell them what a huge loss they have made by them not thinking it was a genuine.

That would lead to bad karma as it would be just rubbing them up the wrong way.

If I do sell it & it does make a good profit, I will give them a cut of that.

At the time you purchased it, you really didn't know if it was authentic. You paid what the man asked for and I don't see any problem. You knew where to find the information and he didn't. Case Closed, but I sure would check that shop again in the future!

This is turning into a no win situation.

Let me ask you this, when you said calmer, did you mean "keep calm & carry on"?
So what would you have done, if you had no idea if this was good or bad?

Check my posts to see how many have been called fakes, after collecting for so many years.

Yes, I am a WAF member, but purely to find answers as I am no "expert", as many of my pieces will show.

I've never owned a Spange, & have only ever seen them a long time ago or in pictures.

My area is edged weapons & time pieces, including medieval & renaissance period pieces.

I give up & I don't think I'll post a thing again.

Can't really be arsed with this rubbish as people get pissed off with me getting a bit of good luck, for once.

Funny too that when I post up stuff that I have been told is fake junk, I get the same sort of response, an online cut down by people who have to be as vocal as possible in my bad luck. To the point where they have become some sort of WAF Polizei & giving the person a good telling off.

Very hostile, very unfriendly & very strange really.

It was in amongst junk for £5 up.

I used a cloth & some Renaissance wax to the front, not polish.
To protect its surface too.

It had no frosting to the front when I first saw it. Fortunately, & due to my years of edged weapons restoration work, I have the knowledge to re frost the front.

If that is not good enough for you, then that is that as I really think if it had been a fake I would have got a better response.

I picked up from another trader the same day, a Russian Front medal, in original waxed packet, with numbered 5578, dated 29/8/1942 citation, back card, in a family named, addressed & numbered IIc 5578 postal envelope dated 4/4/44 for £80. A bargain too I think but 100% sure of, as the seller knew too.

You can still find bargains if the leg work is done.

The majority of collectors on WAF are friendly, helpful and generous with their information, but like everything in life you always get one, so stick with it.
