New Collector - German Cross in Gold - Opinions

    Hello

I have the option to purchase this, but I would appreciate some feedback from more experienced collectors. This piece is way outside of my area of knowledge and I simply just don't have the expertise to be certain if it is authentic.

    Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your note. I'm learning here - what do you see that indicates it's a fake fantasy piece?

First and foremost, the engraving. Anything engraved like this - especially SS - is about 99.99999999999999999999999% of the time fake. Other than that, the pin is wrong, as is the maker mark. Do a search here for German Crosses in Gold marked 2, read the threads, compare your pictures. You'll see.

          Thank you Hank C.

Like I said, this is way out of my field of knowledge. I appreciate the guidance.

A friendly advise: buy some good books and study what you are going to collect. Before buying medals and badges, post here! You will save some money that way

              Hello Ludwig

Thank you for your advice. I've utilized the info from this site many, many times over the years and it has helped me and my studies immensely. I do not collect medals, but this opportunity presented it's self locally and seemed intriguing. In my former career I was a museum manager in the collection's dept, so I've been trained to access an artifact based on the physical evidence, not the story. In this case I knew enough just to be potentially dangerous (to my wallet!), but conversely I know when I have a shadow of a doubt to solicit advice from specialists. And what better place to go than wehrmact-awards.com

Thank you everyone, I respect your knowledge and advice.

It's still a nice fantasy piece, if the price is right.

                  Hello Ralph

He's asking $1,100 for it. He's seen this thread and still hasn't changed his price. Thanks to everyone 's advice, I just wished him good luck with his sale, kept my money in my pocket and walked away.

This primitive marked 2 fake has been around awhile .
A slightly altered (but not really improved) pin/marked version has since followed .
