War Merit Cross with Swords.

Hi...I know enough about how EK's were distributed and why....HOWEVER, I have a War Merit Cross with swords and don't really know under what circumstances these were awarded???? Some also have no swords - what does that mean - does that signify a different class?
Anyways....I'd like to know the story behind the WMC....why were they issued and under what circumstances. Thanks for any info you can throw my way.
