    Frank & Gordon,

I hope you dont mind, but I've combined and post your images here.

Chris, is this the area of your concern? You certainly do have a good eye as I wouldn't have picked it.

Could somebody please post an original for comparision

        George,
I noticed the pin hinge and hook assembly looks a lot like Meybauer on your cross. I have an L/13 marked Spanish Cross looks a lot like your Schinkle's. Is the catch round wire with a twist in it?

          Hi Bill,
You are indeed the man! wish I could figure out the cut and paste and post thing..
If you look carefully you will see the down swing has more "swing" to it than the up swing.
          All the best
          Chris

and the reverse. From what I have seen, this seems to be the common setup seen on these.

It seems to me that if a silver item had an incused mark, it would stand out after cleaning, as that black stuff would fill the depression.

Good eye, Warren! Yes, the pin on my Schinkel-form EK 1 is made of twisted wire.
Here is a comparison between the reverse of the cross (left) and an unmarked "regular" 1939 EK 1 that I believe was made by Meybauer.

                      Dear Stijn,

It certainly looks like this croos is belonging to the fake family shown in this thread. It seems it even has the "different curves" mistake pointed out by Chris and illustrated in BillĀ“s comparison picture.

                      I vote for Latvia!

                      Cheers, Frank H.

                          Hinge plate

Looking at this one and the one Gordon posted, bottom arm not symmetrical, and that hinge plate... I did not spot the difference the other Schikel's were shown, I for one will not buy an EK with that hinge plate, original or not.

                          Regards
                          Andy

                            Hi Andy,

If you write off the hinge as shown in this thread, you will be writing off a lot of genuine items. Go back and study the hinge/pin/catch on Mark Schroeder's Schinkel EK1. There are HUGE differences between that assembly, which is 100% correct and genuine, and the repros in this thread. My personal opinion is that these hinges started appearing post WW1 (although possibly as early as very late 1918) because 1919 dated Stalhelm badges used this type of hinge (as well as the rest of the series). Certainly many genuine (replacement, second) 1914 EK1s, early 1939 EK1s (schinkels and round 3s), early DKs and EK1 Spanges used this type of hinge. The latter tells me that the hinge was in use until at least 1941 (DK introduction year). Many 20s and 30s veterans association pinback badges, non-military Third Reich awards (eg 1st Class pinback fire award) also used this type of hinge. Wernstein even used a similar (but not the same) type of hinge of their wartime zinc badges.

                            Regards

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

I was fooled by the exact same cross as the one Stijn shows only without a maker mark, tooling frame shape and hinge/catch identical. seems that a variety of maker marks are being put on these.moremad

Just to add my 2 cents, another thing about these crosses is that the pin is not stamped, there are no shear marks on the side, in fact it appears to be hand made from a rather soft material.
It would interest me to know how the pins of the originals are made, as I do not have one myself.
