Iron Cross 1st Cl - In Cloth!

    Hi Guys

I would like to get your opinions on this IC 1st Cl in cloth. I realize these are for lack of a better word controversial due to the fact that there is not much information about these as well as they are hand made and vary from individual to individual.

I would not have normally have posted this except from where it was discovered.

It was found in a box inside a steamship chest in a crawl space. In the box contained the vets WWI and WWII medals, his cap badges and collar dogs, paybook, discharge papers, and other military documents.

Besides his personal war artifacts, the only other item in the box was the IC in cloth.

Here's the pictures, its difficult to see the sawz or the 1939 as the black thread for these matches the background thread.

let me know what you think,

    thanks, Al R

Well, these are impossible to judge from photos but I'll take a stab and say that I like it on first glance. It's something I'd pick up to inspect at a show if I saw it, especially if I could verify the story that came with it.
      Best regards,

It would be quite easy to distinguish one from a period photo, as it's very different in shape compared to the others.

        These cloth EK1 are tricky.

            Hi Guys

thanks for looking at my post and providing your very helpful comments.

I checked GW's book on the IC in the section on cloth ones and noticed the examples in his book were very different from this one which looked like they were hand sewn in the field and had an obvious hand sewn look to them (irregular shapes, etc.).

I was just thinking after I posted this, In addition to his medals and other paper docs in the box, was his post war caps for his local Legion membership, so who knows, maybe he won the IC in a card game (post war replica) and threw it in there with his caps one day (?).

            best regards, Al
