    Dear Dietrich,

What is your theory how this depressed defect (raised part in the die) came into existence? I am asking because there are original DKiG in cloth by the same maker without the defect?
    Cheers, Frank

      Hi Frank,

the defect in the upper part of the "9" is added material in the wreath. So there was a "hole" or crack developing in the die in that area.

I have yet to see a 'depressed' flaw in a piece, i.e. a raised part in the die. I was just answering Tom in this regard.

Maybe it becomes clearer with this little experiment. With a putty you take an impression of the piece. This will give you the shape of the die that actually stamped the part. As you can see, the top of the "9'" is missing in the die (broken off?) and leaves the 'raised' flaw in the piece.
